Science, Religion and their Relationship from the Perspective of Abul- Hasan ʿAmiri

Abstract

The issue under discussion in this article is the definition, characteristics, nature, and relationship between science and religion from the perspective of Abul-Hassan ʿAmiri. ʿAmiri considers science and religion to have a rational essence, and his thoughts in this area can be examined within the intellectual framework of Islamic philosophers. He divides science into two categories: religious and philosophical, and enumerates subcategories for each. In his opinion, science only finds meaning within the framework of reason and has a rational nature. From ʿAmiri's perspective, religion is a collection of theoretical and practical propositions from the source of revelation, possessing rational necessity, which is understood by the perfect and abstract intellect of the prophet; and revelation, in his view, is the reception of truths by the prophet's intellect from God. On this basis, none of the sciences are in conflict with religion, and religion holds a higher rank. ʿAmiri regards the relationship between science and religion as manifestations of a single truth, and all his analyses must be understood within this general framework.
