Abstract

Nihāyat al-Ḥikmah, the magnum opus of ʿAllamah Tabatabaʾi, stands as one of the most significant philosophical texts in contemporary Islamic thought, meticulously examining fundamental philosophical issues. Over the years, this work has been the subject of various interpretations and critiques, among the most prominent being the glosses of Gholamreza Fayyazi. Notably, critiques such as the objection to the title chosen for the discussion on knowledge, doubts regarding Allamah's argument for the proof of presentational knowledge based on individuation, and criticisms of Allamah's definition of presentational and representational knowledge and the manner in which representational knowledge returns to presentational knowledge, indicate methodological differences between these two thinkers. This paper undertakes an analytical and critical examination of these critiques, endeavoring to clarify that Fayyazi's criticisms, despite their scholarly rigor, do not, in some instances, undermine the validity of Allamah Tabatabaʾi's viewpoints. The paper emphasizes the importance of a precise understanding of these differing perspectives for a better comprehension of philosophical concepts and the promotion of critical analysis in contemporary Islamic philosophy.
