The concept of ethics, as one of the key and simultaneously most challenging issues in the realm of human teachings, has always been the subject of attention and investigation. Examining ethical principles and rules and developing multiple theories in this field, in order to find the best model of life, is considered one of the most important man’s intellectual endeavors. The present study explores Ludwig Wittgenstein's views in the field of ethics, considering his existential approach, and provides a fresh interpretation of the path to the attainment of a meaningful life in the realm of ethics. Based on the analysis of the concept of bioethics in Wittgenstein's philosophy, it is specifically argued that an ethical and meaningful life, according to him, is based on the exercise of moral will and the solution of the puzzle of life, both of which require adopting a special perspective towards the world. In this perspective, the world is perceived in an eternal domain.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the function of religious experience in making sense of life from William James’ point of view along with the description and analysis of the critiques. He considers the religious experience as a necessary and sufficient condition for discovering meaning. He considers religion as something individual. With the evidence he provides for the subjectivity of emotions and the privacy of the mental life, we find out that James' views correspond with the new science and the specificity of religious experience and its meaning. Also, James' empirical explanations are uncertain and he does not see the need _________________________ * University of Tehran amir_alizamani@ut.ac.ir ** Payame Noor University mytraabbas@yahoo.com ** Payame Noor University jpaykani@yahoo.com Reception date: 99/8/25 Acceptance date: 99/11/15 to prove it rationally. Empirical explanations such as search for meaning by all human beings and the falsification of meaning and the reduction of meaning to purpose indicate that the search for meaning is the most fundamental driving force in life and the reason for man’s religious sense. James looks more at the sense of meaning than the meaning itself. James' view of religious experience and meaning is influenced by pragmatic thinking about utility.

The meaning of life, as a significant issue, has been considered by Ostad Motahari and Allameh Jaafari. The analytic-descriptive study of these two Muslim thinkers’ views shows that, in spite of considerable similarities, there are essential differences between their approaches to this issue. The differences are classified under three categories: (1) The theological and transmitted approach of Ostad Motahari to this issue in comparison with the rational and philosophical approach of Allameh Jaafari; (2) Motahari’s non-independent and reductionist attitude to the issue of meaning of life versus Jafari’s independent and pivotal attitude toward it; (3) Motahari’s lack of attention to the issue of meaning of life and his approach to take it for granted versus the serious attention of Allameh Jaafari to this question and his efforts to derive the answer through analyzing the question. These fundamental differences represent two different ways through which the meaning of life is discussed in the realm of Islamic- Iranian thinking thought.
