Abstract

In the Middle Ages, the church believed that the use of force and coercion to guide people is desirable; After the Renaissance, thinkers such as "John Locke" proposed the theory of "tolerance" to counter this approach and defend religious freedom. Today, tolerance has become one of the dominant discourses in the field of culture and society. This theory in the West and liberal thought itself is based on principles such as the originality of freedom, individualism, relativism and behavioral rationality. It is claimed that this theory is entirely based on scientific principles and human experimental findings, and some even consider it compatible with religious teachings and oppose it as a sign of intellectual and religious rigidity and petrification. In this article, an attempt has been made to criticize the assumptions and theoretical foundations of tolerance with scientific, rational and religious arguments and to prove that this theory, as proposed in liberalism and the West, is not successful in theory or in practice. It is not accompanied and needs to be revised and modified. The method of this research was descriptive-analytical and the method of collecting data was library.
