Examining the Mystical Meaning of “Fiṭrah” in Supplications

Abstract

The concept of "fiṭrah" (primordial nature) has long been a central theme in Islamic thought. However, the theological perspective on this concept has often overlooked its mystical dimensions, thereby highlighting the necessity of the present study. The central issue of this research relies on the premise within the Islamic mystical tradition that the universe is founded upon the divine names (asmāʾ Allāh). Accordingly, based on the name "al-Fāṭir" (the Originator), it emphasizes the need to reinterpret the mystical concept of fiṭrah within mystical and supplicatory texts. The research method is descriptive-analytical, accompanied by a documentary study of mystical texts and supplications. The findings confirm that within the mystical worldview, "fiṭrah" is a reality which: firstly, serves as the primordial substance and original essence, latent both in the heart of the "Perfect Human" and as the foundation of the order of the "macrocosm." Secondly, this essence was deposited in the hearts of human beings prior to physical creation, in the "world of spirits," and through spiritual purification, it can re-emerge and exit its state of concealment. Thirdly, this primordial fiṭrah can be corrupted. In this regard, mystics analyze the corrupted fiṭrah in humans and its impact on the world under the category of "evil," attributing its origin to human free will—a will made possible by "possessing knowledge coupled with an instrument (the body)."
