The term "Essence" and its interpretation as the "station of the Absolute Hidden Essence" refer to the consideration of the Essence "in itself" whereas "manifestations" or "multiplicities" pertain to the Essence as qualified by specific states and hierarchical levels. Mystics describe the "Essence qua Essence" as an unbounded horizon that, due to its absolute transcendence accepts no division, name, or judgment. Consequently, what mystics articulate about the Essence assumes an apophatic form. For instance, Imam Khomeini limits human knowledge and understanding of the Sacred Divine Essence to awareness of the "Names and Attributes," denying even the possibility of direct knowledge of the Absolute Reality.
To elucidate the consideration of the "Essence qua Essence," Imam Khomeini enumerates apophatic characteristics or components for the Essence within the framework of mystical ontology, each requiring precise contemplation.
" Furthermore, he identifies the acknowledgment of the "unknowability" of the Divine Essence and the "shortcomings and inadequacies of human knowledge in comprehending it" as the foundational principle of spiritual wayfaring This study seeks to analyze these apophatic components to explicate Imam Khomeini's perspective on the Essence and the station of the Absolute Hidden within the mystical ontological framework.
