The four natures have a central role in the theories of natural philosophy of Jabir ibn Hayyan, to the extent that his natural philosophy can be named the physics of natures. There is rarely some text attributed to Jabir that does not explain natures in detail. From a historical view, there are correspondences and similarities between Jabir's theories and the traditions preceding him in natural philosophy but some of his claims make the hypothesis of the novelty of Jabir's theory, especially in terms of the ontology of natures. The basis of this hypothesis is that Jabir, in according with his completely pragmatic view, considers qualities to be independent and, of course, corporal entities that, like physical material, can be combined and, in some processes, can also be decomposed from other substances or entities. However, this hypothesis requires an analysis and comparison of his claims with the physical traditions that preceded him, namely the Aristotelian, Platonic, Stoic, and Neoplatonic traditions of natural philosophy. The problem of this article is to explain the ontological status of the four natures in Jabir and to evaluate the level of their distinction based on the texts, manuscripts and contents related to the subject.
