The theory of evolution has encountered various confrontations in the Western intellectual-philosophical tradition. In the Islamic world, theologians have adopted affirmative, negative and interpretative readings. Shahid Motahari considers the most important issues of science and religion to be the “principle of evolution” and the “principle of monotheism” and offers a specific explanation with a rational-philosophical approach and with the help of religious and philosophical concepts and terms. In his opinion, neither theology is necessary for creation, nor can one conclude from the transformation of types of materialism; rather, the relationship between the two should be introduced with a clear logical and philosophical analysis and an illusory contradiction. He believes that the root of the conflict lies in the philosophical thoughts of the Middle Ages, the inadequacy of Western philosophical concepts, and the improper interpretation of religious texts. To resolve the symbolic conflict, introducing the language of revelation in the story of the creation of Adam points to the linguistic separation of science and religion and different versions of the conflict.
